Are Bifacial Solar Panels Worth It for Power Stations?

Are bifacial solar panels worth it for an EcoFlow power station? The 125W Bifacial and 400W Lightweight specs, which stations they fit, and the back-side current caution.

Key takeaways

  • A bifacial panel also collects light reflected onto its back. EcoFlow rates the 125W Bifacial at 125W (STC) and 138W (BNPI), and the 400W Lightweight at 400W (STC) and 445W (BNPI).
  • The back-side gain depends on your setup: a raised panel over a light-coloured surface gains more than one lying flat on dark ground.
  • The 125W Bifacial has a 50V Voc. It must NOT go on RIVER 2 or RIVER 3 (30V max) or RIVER 2 Max/Pro (50V max, no safety margin). It fits RIVER 3 Plus/Max/Max Plus and the DELTA 3 family.
  • Bifacial gain raises current. On 13A inputs, the extra back-side current of one 400W Lightweight (13.5A BNPI) or four 125W panels in parallel (13.6A BNPI) would exceed 13A, so treat these as cautions.
  • Worth it if your station can use the extra watts and you can raise the panel. Not worth paying extra for if your station's solar cap is already filled.

Bifacial panels are worth it when your power station can use the extra watts and you can raise the panel so light reaches its back. EcoFlow rates the 125W Bifacial panel at 125W (STC) and 138W (BNPI), and the 400W Lightweight panel at 400W (STC) and 445W (BNPI). Neither 125W Bifacial setup works on RIVER 2, RIVER 3 or RIVER 2 Max/Pro.

How bifacial panels work

A normal panel collects light only on its front. A bifacial panel also has cells that collect light reaching its back, mostly sunlight reflected off the ground and surroundings. EcoFlow gives two ratings:

  • STC, the standard front-side rating, used for all our compatibility checks.
  • BNPI, a rating with added back-side light under a bifacial test condition.

How much of that extra you actually get depends on your setup. A panel raised on its stand over pale concrete or sand gains more than one lying flat on dark soil or grass. The front still needs to face the sun.

EcoFlow’s two bifacial panels

125W Bifacial Modular 400W Lightweight
Rating (STC / BNPI) 125W / 138W 400W / 445W
Voc 50V 39.3V
Isc (STC / BNPI) 3.2A / 3.4A 12.2A / 13.5A
Weight 4.2 kg about 10.2 kg
Connector XT60W (IP68), XT60W-to-XT60i cable included Built-in XT60, plugs straight in
Wiring EcoFlow recommends Parallel, up to 8 panels Series between same-model panels

The 125W is a high-voltage, low-current panel built for parallel. The 400W Lightweight is a large single panel.

Which stations they fit

Verified pairings (all within each port’s voltage and current limits):

Station 125W Bifacial 400W Lightweight
RIVER 2, RIVER 3, RIVER 3 UPS No (50V Voc, 30V max input) No (voltage and current too high)
RIVER 2 Max, RIVER 2 Pro No (50V Voc on a 50V input, no margin) 1 panel, usable 220W (back-side caution)
RIVER 3 Plus, Max, Max Plus 1 panel (125W) or 2 in parallel (220W usable) 1 panel, usable 220W (back-side caution)
DELTA 3, DELTA 3 Plus (per port), DELTA 3 1500, DELTA 3 Classic Up to 4 in parallel (500W) 1 panel (400W)
DELTA 3 Max Up to 4 in parallel (500W; back-side caution at 4) 1 panel (400W; back-side caution)

Two 400W Lightweight panels in series reach 78.6V. That is too high for every 60V DELTA 3 input, so don’t wire them that way.

Buyer’s guides: RIVER 3 Plus, RIVER 2 Max, DELTA 3, DELTA 3 Max.

The back-side current caution

Back-side light adds current. Our checks use the STC current, which is within the limit in every pairing above. But on 13A inputs, the BNPI current would go over:

These are flagged, not failed. If you want to stay strictly inside the limit on a 13A station, use three 125W panels instead of four on DELTA 3 Max (9.6A STC), and don’t set the 400W Lightweight up for maximum back-side gain.

So, is it worth it?

  • Yes if your station can take more than the panel’s front-side watts. On a DELTA 3, four 125W Bifacial panels fill the full 500W input.
  • Less so if the station’s cap is already filled. On a RIVER 2 Max or RIVER 3 Plus, a single 400W Lightweight already exceeds the 220W cap, so back-side gain adds little.
  • No for RIVER 2 and RIVER 3. Neither bifacial panel is compatible.

Plug-and-play portable panels can be set up by the owner following the manual. Anything wired to the house, a breaker panel, the roof or the grid needs a licensed electrician or PEE and an LGU electrical permit.

Bottom line

Bifacial panels earn their keep on stations with room to spare, especially the DELTA 3 family with four 125W panels in parallel. Raise them over a light surface to get the back-side gain. Never use the 125W Bifacial on RIVER 2, RIVER 3 or RIVER 2 Max/Pro, and keep the back-side current caution in mind on 13A inputs.

Frequently asked questions

What does BNPI mean on a bifacial solar panel?
It is the rating EcoFlow gives for the panel with added light reaching the back side under a standard bifacial test condition. It is higher than the normal (STC) rating, but real-world back-side gain depends on the ground, height and angle.
Can I use the EcoFlow 125W Bifacial panel with a RIVER 3?
No. Its open-circuit voltage is 50V, and the RIVER 3 solar input accepts 11-30V. EcoFlow's manual warns to keep panel voltage under 30V to avoid damage. Use it with RIVER 3 Plus, RIVER 3 Max, RIVER 3 Max Plus or a DELTA 3 model instead.
Are EcoFlow's 160W and 220W panels on Lazada bifacial?
The 160W and 220W listings we link to are EcoFlow's single-face NextGen panels. EcoFlow's PH store also sells different 160W and 220W Lightweight bifacial panels. Check which one a listing is before you buy.
How should I set up a bifacial panel to get the back-side gain?
Raise it off the ground on its stand, keep the back open to the sky and surroundings, and place it over a light-coloured surface such as pale concrete or sand rather than dark soil. Keep the front aimed at the sun as usual.
