How Many Solar Panels Does It Take to Run a 1HP Inverter Aircon?

How many solar panels run a 1HP inverter aircon? About 1,000–1,300W of panels for 8 hours a day in our worked example, using verified aircon watts and panel setups.

Key takeaways

  • Verified 1HP inverter aircons are rated 650W to 880W on their DOE labels or manufacturer specs.
  • Worked example: a 740W Kolin unit used 8 hours a day, averaging half its rated power, needs about 1,090W of panels with 4 peak sun hours (all labelled example assumptions).
  • That's about 5 × EcoFlow 220W panels, a verified series setup on the EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3's High-PV input (1,100W usable).
  • The panels charge a battery; the battery runs the aircon. Panels alone can't run it steadily.
  • Rainy-season days give less sun, so treat these as sunny-day numbers and add margin.

  7. Bottom line

A 1HP inverter aircon used 8 hours a day needs roughly 1,000–1,300W of solar panels feeding a battery, based on verified aircon ratings of 650–880W and an example of 4 peak sun hours. For the 740W Kolin KA-100GQAIINV32, that’s about 1,090W, which works out to 5 × EcoFlow 220W panels in series on an EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3.

Step 1: The aircon’s verified watts

1HP inverter model Rated input CSPF
TCL TAC-11CSD/P7 (split) 650W 7.11
TCL TAC-09CWI/UJE2 (window) 733W 4.88
Kolin KA-100GQAIINV32 (window) 740W 5.6
iFFALCON IFAC-09CWI/UL (window) 880W 4.96

Figures are from DOE energy labels reproduced by retailers.

Step 2: Energy per day

Example assumptions: 8 hours of use a day, and the unit averages half its rated watts once the room is cool. The DOE’s older label formula uses the same 0.5 factor for inverter units. Your own use may be higher on hot afternoons.

  • Kolin 740W × 8 h × 0.5 = 2,960 Wh at the aircon
  • The station loses some energy turning battery DC into AC. Our EcoFlow runtime calculator assumes 85% reaches AC devices: 2,960 ÷ 0.85 = 3,482 Wh from the battery

Step 3: Panel watts

Example assumption: 4 peak sun hours, and about 80% of rated panel watts reaching the battery after heat, angle and charging losses (why panels give less than rated).

Panel watts ≈ 3,482 ÷ 4 ÷ 0.8 ≈ 1,090W

Same maths for the other models: about 960W for the 650W TCL P7, and about 1,290W for the 880W iFFALCON. A low-watt unit really does save you panels.

Verified setups that reach that size

A 1,000W+ array needs a station with a big solar input. These are within EcoFlow’s published port limits:

Station Panel setup Usable solar
DELTA Pro 3 (Shopee · Lazada), High-PV input 5 × EcoFlow 220W in series 1,100W
DELTA Pro 3, High-PV input 6 × EcoFlow 220W in series 1,320W
DELTA Pro 3, High-PV input 3 × EcoFlow 400W Lightweight in series 1,200W
DELTA 3 Max (Shopee · Lazada) 2 × EcoFlow 220W in series 440W (short sessions only)

Notes from the manuals:

  • The 220W panels’ MC4 leads join male-to-female for series wiring.
  • EcoFlow’s DELTA Pro 3 manual specifies a “Solar to XT60 Charging cable” for the High-PV port. EcoFlow doesn’t say whether the 220W panel’s included XT60i cable fits that port, so check before you buy.
  • The 400W Lightweight needs a series cable that is sold separately.
  • The DELTA 3 Max takes a maximum of 500W of solar, so it can’t reach 1,000W. Use it for a few hours of cooling, not all-day use.

These are portable, plug-and-play panels the owner can set up by following the manual. Mounting panels on the roof or wiring them to the house needs a licensed electrician and an LGU permit.

What about rooftop panels?

For a permanent system, a hybrid inverter like the PowMr 6.5kW (48V) takes a larger roof array. See running your aircon on solar while the sun is up. That route needs a licensed PEE design, an LGU permit and, for grid export, the net-metering process.

What to buy

Check today’s price before you buy. Have the aircon installed by a licensed technician.

Bottom line

Divide the aircon’s daily Wh by 0.85, then by your sun hours, then by 0.8. For a verified 1HP inverter unit used 8 hours a day, that’s about 1,000–1,300W of panels, which in practice means a DELTA Pro 3-class station or a licensed rooftop system. Frequently asked questions

How many 400W panels do I need for a 1HP aircon?
In our 8-hours-a-day example, about 3. The DELTA Pro 3's High-PV input accepts 3 × EcoFlow 400W Lightweight panels in series (1,200W usable). The series cable is sold separately.
Can 2 panels run a 1HP aircon?
Only for short sessions. Two 220W panels (440W) on a DELTA 3 Max collect about 1,760 Wh on a 4-peak-sun-hour day before losses. After the example losses in this article (× 0.8, then × 0.85) that's about 1,200 Wh, or roughly 3 hours of a 740W inverter unit averaging half its rated power.
Why do you assume the aircon uses half its rated watts?
Inverter units slow down once the room is cool. The DOE's older energy-label formula assumes inverter units average 0.5 of their rated power. Your real figure depends on room size, insulation and weather.
