Running Your Aircon on Solar While the Sun Is Up (Hybrid Inverter)
Run your aircon on solar while the sun is up: a hybrid inverter powers house loads from roof panels. Sizing maths, PowMr specs and the licensed-install rules.
Checked against the sources listed below. How we research.
Key takeaways
- Daytime is when solar and aircon use line up best. A hybrid inverter can power your house loads from the panels, with the battery and grid as backup.
- Example: a 1,000W TCL 1.5HP inverter unit for 8 daytime hours, averaging half its rated power, uses about 4,000 Wh.
- A string of 8 PowMr 150W panels (1,200W) on a PowMr 6.5kW hybrid inverter is within our verified limits (4 to 18 in series). With 4 peak sun hours (example), it gives about 4,800 Wh before losses.
- PowMr's catalogue lists 50Hz or 60Hz output and an 80A utility charger. It doesn't describe grid export, so don't assume the unit can export.
- This is a wired system: it needs a licensed PEE design, an LGU permit, and a word with your electric company (Meralco offers Zero Export or net metering).
On this page
Yes, you can run your aircon on solar while the sun is up, and it’s the most efficient way to use solar for cooling. A hybrid inverter can power the house loads from the panels, with the battery and grid as backup, so the aircon runs on sunshine. Your installer sets the source priority, following the inverter’s manual. The hottest hours are also the sunniest, so supply and demand line up. One example setup is a PowMr 6.5kW hybrid inverter (48V) with a string of PowMr 150W panels, running an efficient unit such as the TCL TAC-14CSD/P7. It must be installed by licensed professionals.
Why daytime self-consumption works
- No battery round trip: power used as it’s made skips the charge-and-discharge losses that night use involves.
- Smaller battery: the battery only has to smooth out clouds and cover the evening, not carry the whole load.
- Bill savings: every kWh the panels supply is one you don’t buy from the electric company. See our solar savings calculator.
Sizing example
Aircon: TCL TAC-14CSD/P7, a 1.5HP split inverter rated 1,000W on its DOE label (CSPF 6.74).
Example assumptions: 8 daytime hours (say, work-from-home), and the unit averages half its rated power once the room is cool. That matches the DOE’s older label factor of 0.5 for inverter units.
- Daytime use: 1,000 × 8 × 0.5 = 4,000 Wh
Panels: PowMr’s 150W flexible panel (Voc 21.6V, Vmp 18V, Isc 9.16A per PowMr). On the 6.5kW inverter, our compatibility check allows 4 to 18 panels in series. The string needs at least 4 panels to reach the 55V MPPT minimum, and 18 panels keep it under 90% of the 450V maximum. A string of 8:
- 8 × 21.6V = 172.8V Voc (well under 450V), 8 × 18V = 144V working voltage (above 55V)
- 8 × 150W = 1,200W
- With an example of 4 peak sun hours: about 4,800 Wh a day before losses, roughly matching the 4,000 Wh above
Cloudy and rainy-season days will fall short, and that’s when the battery or grid fills in. A second string is allowed in our check, but the inverter’s maximum PV current isn’t in any source we verified, so confirm it on the nameplate before wiring strings in parallel.
What the PowMr catalogue says
| PowMr 4.5kW (24V) | PowMr 6.5kW (48V) | |
|---|---|---|
| Rated output | 4,500W | 6,500W |
| Surge | 2× rated for 5 seconds | 2× rated for 5 seconds |
| Output | 230Vac, 50Hz or 60Hz | 230Vac, 50Hz or 60Hz |
| Max PV input | 6,000W | 6,500W |
| PV Voc max | 450V | 450V |
| Utility charging | up to 80A | up to 80A |
| Grid export | not described | not described |
Both listings mention 500V PV and slightly different charger currents. The catalogue figures are used here, so confirm the nameplate. The listing titles say “On-grid/Off-grid”, but the catalogue has no feed-in section, so don’t assume these units can export to the grid. Links: PowMr 4.5kW · PowMr 6.5kW. The rules: licensed install, permit, utility
- RA 7920, Sec. 34: wiring plans must be signed and sealed by a professional electrical engineer (PEE), a permit secured first, and the work done under licensed supervision.
- LGU electrical permit, then a Certificate of Final Electrical Inspection, which Meralco lists among its net-metering requirements.
- Utility: Meralco says to inform them even for own-use systems, and offers Zero Export if you won’t export. For export credits, see net metering.

What to buy (for your installer’s plan)
- Hybrid inverter: PowMr 6.5kW (48V) on Lazada, or PowMr 4.5kW (24V) on Lazada
- Panels: PowMr 150W flexible on Lazada (also checked: PowMr 100W flexible, 4 to 18 in series)
- Aircon: TCL TAC-14CSD/P7 (1.5HP) or TAC-11CSD/P7 (1HP, 650W) on Lazada · Shopee, or Kolin KA-150GQAIINV32 1.5HP window on Lazada (1,010W, CSPF 5.53)
Check today’s price before you buy. Have the aircon installed by a licensed technician.
Bottom line
Running the aircon in daytime is where solar pays off most. Size the panels to the daytime Wh (watts × hours × 0.5 in our example ÷ your sun hours), let a hybrid inverter power the house from the panels, and have a licensed PEE design and permit the whole system.
